Subject: FAANG Steering Committee announcement on GTEx projects
To: Members of <faang@animalgenome.org>
Dear FAANG Community;
Based on their Cattle Gene Atlas paper (Fang et al., 2020), colleagues from
University of Edinburgh, USDA-ARS and other institutions plan to establish a
Farm Animal GTEx (FarmGTEx), analogous to goals for a GTEx initiative
recently described in the FAANG to Fork paper (Clark et al., 2020). Members
of the FAANG Steering Committee have met with representatives from FarmGTEx
and we are discussing plans to join forces to understand the genetic basis of
gene expression differences across tissues and individuals. The data and
analytical effort needed to accomplish the goals of FAANG and FarmGTEx in
this area will come from many communities, and we believe success in GTEx
projects will be greatest if we cooperate with each other under data sharing
conventions such as the Toronto/Ft. Lauderdale principles. The mechanism for
sharing unpublished, high quality data that will be proposed by FarmGTEx for
the initial phase will already be useful to many groups, but additional
mechanisms for sharing data may be necessary as GTEx projects develop.
Therefore, we recommend that FAANG members consider collaborating with the
FarmGTEx, while we work to identify a possible route to integrate our GTEx
efforts in the future.
Thanks,
Chris Tuggle and Elisabetta Giuffra
for the Steering Commitee
